Masonic Public Awareness

Tupelo Masonic Lodge No. 318 F&AM is providing the following report and videos as general Masonic information. They are written and produced by the Masonic Service Association of North America.

Masonic Public Awareness

It’s About Time!
is the report completing a study undertaken by a special task force of the Masonic Information Center Steering Committee. This report marks the beginning of a Masonic Public Awareness Program started at the request of the 2004 Conference of Grand Masters in North America.

Why a Study - Why a Report?

The 2004 report from the Masonic Information Center (MIC) to the Conference of Grand Masters focused on the need for Masonic Public Awareness. The collective body of Grand Masters gave overwhelming approval to the MIC to move forward. No resources beyond those of the MIC were committed nor were any asked for at the time. We accepted the challenge and established a highly qualified task force from the Steering Committee of the Masonic Information Center. Our group continues to meet on a regular basis. The Task Force realized that past attempts at public awareness and promotional campaigns had produced disappointing results. If past campaigns with supporting budgets did little to solve the problem, how would our approach be different? Our group resisted the temptation to jump into the “fun” of a creative project, brainstorming activities and designing catchy slogans. We accepted the fact that a traditional PR campaign works only if you know what you want to communicate. The task for our group was to tackle the question of Masonic public identity.

History of The Grand Lodge of Mississippi

It is significant of the Masonic Institution that it is always in the vanguard of every great movement or undertaking of the human race. When the United States was still in its infancy and the Mississippi Territory was still being carved out of the wilderness, the first Masonic lodge was warranted by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky at Natchez, a thriving community on the Mississippi River, on October 16, 1801. This lodge was known as Harmony Lodge No. 7 and was the only lodge working in the Territory until August 29, 1811 when a dispensation was granted to Madison Lodge No. 21 in Huntsville, Alabama. Harmony Lodge continued its labor until September 2, 1814, when for reasons unknown, it surrendered its warrant and property to the Grand Lodge of Kentucky.

However, the following year on August 31, 1815, a dispensation was granted to several of the old members for a new lodge named Harmony Lodge No. 33, and a warrant was granted on August 28, 1816. Some 15 years after the first Masonic presence in what would soon become the STATE of Mississippi was established, a second lodge was chartered at Natchez as well.

On August 13, 1816, the Grand Master of Tennessee issued a dispensation to Jackson Lodge, at Natchez, and on October 8, 1816, the Grand Lodge of Tennessee formally warranted the same lodge under the name of Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 15. The following year, on April 19, 1817, the Grand Lodge of Tennessee also granted a warrant to Washington Lodge No. 17 at Port Gibson. In less than 17 years, Mississippi hosted three Masonic lodges, totaling over 100 members.

Realizing the need for their own government, the three lodges held a convention with 20 representatives present and officialy formed the Grand Lodge of Mississippi on July 27, 1818. At this convention, the following officers were duly elected and installed:

Dr. Henry Tooley, Harmony Lodge No. 33
GRAND MASTER

Christopher Rankin, Harmony Lodge No. 33
DEPUTY GRAND MASTER

Israel Loring, Washington Lodge No. 17
SENIOR GRAND WARDEN

Edward Turner, Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 15
JUNIOR GRAND WARDEN

Henry Postlewaite, Harmony Lodge No. 33
GRAND TREASURER

Chilion Ford Stiles, Harmony Lodge No. 33
GRAND SECRETARY

Joseph Newman, Harmony Lodge No. 33
GRAND STEWARD AND TYLER

With the Constitution being read and adopted, the Grand Secretary was instructed to send announcements to the other Grand Lodges of their new formation. Harmony Lodge surrendered its charter back to the Grand Lodge of Kentucky and the Washington and Andrew Jackson lodges surrendered their charters back to the Grand Lodge of Tennessee. With the Grand Lodge of Mississippi's sovereignty established the three lodges were re-chartered as

Harmony Lodge No. 1 on August 25, 1818

Andrew Jackson Lodge No. 2 on January 5, 1820

Washington Lodge No. 3 on January 15, 1820

The "Virtual Lodge" - Modern Uses of Social Networking to Promote Freemasonry

Social Networking has become a modern way of life, by providing a "Virtual Lodge" whereby brethren of Freemasonry can communicate and fellowship together outside the physical lodge. Tupelo Masonic Lodge No. 318 F&AM has taken a proactive and innovative approach to this by iniating an inclusive variety of social networking media because we understand that no two people are alike and prefer the use of different forums. It is our hope that by making these available, it will make it easier than ever before for our brethren to enjoy the benefits of this great fraternity. Mason or not, you are invited to visit these sites and join in the conversations with us. Please feel free to provide feedback as we are constantly looking for new ways and ideas to help make this service even better! Now my brethren, although your attendance and participation is completely optional, it is however, encouraged.

How do I become a Freemason? 2B1ASK1!

Ask!

Because Masons have not traditionally recruited members, and do not hold public meetings, there has long been confusion about how to join the Fraternity. Does someone invite you? Do you ask? For a man who meets the requirements listed above, it is really quite simple: Men can become a Mason by simply asking. In general, men seek out a Lodge near their home or work (the Lodge Locator feature will help you locate the closest lodge), or they will ask a Mason to recommend a lodge to them. Once you’ve found a lodge you would like to join, let them know of your interest and they will provide you with a petition. If you are unanimously elected by the members of a lodge, joining the Fraternity involves going through three “degrees”: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. Every man accepted into the Fraternity goes through the three degrees, thereby making each an equal to the others in the lodge. Typically they are conferred during a lodge’s monthly meeting over the course of three months.

Letter - Bro Derik Rushing, Worshipful Master, Tupelo Masonic Lodge No 318 F&AM

RE: "30 Guns in 30 Days" Give-A-Way Fundraiser

I would also, like to take this time to thank all who supported this fundraising drive by purchasing a ticket, and those who worked to sell tickets in order to make this a success.

Although, everyone could not win a gun, you are all winners in supporting this drive, to help us help out the boys home and the girls home. The work that these homes do is to be commended and we look forward to being of assistance to these causes in the future.

Sincerely
Derik Rushing W.M.
