York Rite of Freemasonry in Mississippi

York Rite of Freemasonry

in Mississippi

Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons

Capitular Masonry is the first step in the completion of the York Rite. In the United States, a Chapter of Royal Arch Masons confers the degrees of Mark Master, Past Master, Most Excellent Master, and The Most Sublime Degree of the Holy Royal Arch, which all symbolically take place during the actual construction of King Solomon's Temple. Freemasons who hold membership in a Royal Arch Chapter are styled "Companions". The Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in Mississippi governs 50 local Chapters throughout the State, and is in turn subordinate to the General Grand Chapter, Royal Arch Masons International.

Grand Council, Royal and Select Masters

Cryptic Masonry is the next step in the completion of the York Rite. In the United States, a Council of Royal and Select Masters confers the degrees of Royal Master and Select Master, with the optional addition of the Super Excellent Master degree, which endeavor to instruct those aspiring to its mysteries on the preservation and recovery of the Lost Word referenced in the Blue Lodge. Freemasons who hold membership in a Council of Royal and Select Masters are styled "Companions". The Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters in Mississippi governs 50 local Councils throughout the State, and is in turn subordinate to the General Grand Council, Cryptic Masons International.

Grand Commandery, Knights Templar

Chivalric Masonry is the culmination of the York Rite system. By building on what is taught in the Blue Lodge, the Knights Templar provide a path for those who wish to continue their journey through Freemasonry by adding the lessons of Christian chivalry and devotion to duty that so marked the ancient Templars. In the United States, a Commandery of Knights Templar confers the Order of the Red Cross, the Order of Malta and the Order of the Temple. Freemasons who hold membership in a Commandery of Knights Templar are styled "Sir Knights". The Grand Commandery of Knights Templar in Mississippi governs 50 local Commanderies throughout the State, and is in turn subordinate to the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States.

Widows Sons Masonic Riders Association - Mississippi Chapter

The Widows Sons is an International Masonic Motorcycle Association comprised of Freemasons. The purpose of founding the Widows Sons is to aid and assist widows and orphans of Master Masons. This is done by forming a widow’s fund within the Grand Chapter to contribute to the aid of widows in our state. No other fund should take precedence over our widow’s fund. We were founded in 1998 for the sole purpose of aiding and assisting widows. If you are interested in our purpose, please contact us.

Any widow of a master mason should contact the Widows Sons Grand Chapter in your state for assistance when you are in need. They were founded for this purpose.

In 2001, two years after our founding, a second and third purpose was added to the bylaws. The second was to provide a social and fraternal outlet for Freemasons who ride and desire to socialize with and travel the open roads with their brethren. The third was to introduce Freemasonry to the world of motorcycles and motorcycling to the world of Freemasonry. The second and third purposes are very distant second and third purposes, far behind the aiding and assisting of widows, and these should not take precedence over our founding purpose of aiding and assisting widows of master masons.

To join an existing chapter or Grand Chapter, you must contact that chapter directly. We have a list of all of our Grand Chapters and their constituent chapters on our Chapters page. Where there is no link available on our Chapters list, you may use our Contact Form where we will be able to put you in touch with the respective chapter or jurisdiction. Note: We often receive inquiries on becoming a member-at-large. This was a temporary program intended to introduce the Widows Sons in areas where we had no chapters. This program is no longer available! In order to become a member you must contact a chapter in your state, province, or country. When there is none available, the only other option is to contact the Founder Carl Davenport carladavenport@hotmail.com in order to be put in touch with a sponsoring Grand Chapter who will assist you in the formation of your own Grand Chapter.

Masonic Car Tags

We all have to buy a tag for our vehicles. Why not support Masonry in Mississippi at the same time? For an additional $31.00 you can have a Masonic tag like the one pictured above. Of the $31.00 extra cost, $24.00 of this goes to the Grand Lodge of Mississippi. This helps keep Grand Lodge assessments low while making your car look good.

You'll need to get a form from the Secretary of your Lodge in order to purchase the tag. If your Lodge Secretary does not have one, he may download it from the Secretary's Center of this website, or you may contact the Grand Secretary here. You can get these tags in the county where you pay your taxes.

Life as a Mason

What is the typical life of a Mason?

It’s a question we get a lot from men who are deciding if they’d like to join the craft. The real answer is: There is no “typical” life of a Mason. Masons come from all walks of life — from Corporate CEOs to city bus drivers, from commodities brokers to auto mechanics. What unifies Masons is not where we come from or what we do for a living, but rather what we aspire to be.

QUALITIES OF A MASON
The essential qualities Masons share in their diverse lives are a belief in a Supreme Being and a desire to strive for:

  • fellowship with other Masons
  • high moral standards
  • kindness in the home
  • courtesy in society
  • honesty in business
  • fairness in all dealings

BEING A MASON

Being a Mason is about a father helping his son make better decisions; a business leader striving to bring morality to the workplace; a thoughtful man learning to work through tough issues in his life.

FELLOWSHIP, FRIENDSHIP, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE

Throughout a Mason’s life, fellowship and friendship is a key component, as well as community service. The typical Mason wants to continue to grow as a man and to benefit society.

Orient of Mississippi of the Supreme Council 33° Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Southern Jurisdiction

Scottish Rite Philanthropies

A duty of all Masons is to support various "Masonic" philanthropies so far as they can. These philanthropies most often do not require the recipient to be a Mason or family of a Mason. Probably the best-known Masonic philanthropies are the Shrine Hospitals. The Shrine is not alone in doing "Good Works". The "Blue Lodges" have their philanthropies as do the York Rite and the other appendant bodies to masonry. We of the Southern Jurisdiction of the Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite have as one of our major philanthropy dyslexia research and educational material for students and adults with the disorder which causes the brain to not interpret the written word in the same manner as happens for most of us.

Freemasonry and Religion

Basic Principles. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It requires of its members a belief in God as part of the obligation of every responsible adult, but advocates no sectarian faith or practice. Masonic ceremonies include prayers, both traditional and extempore, to reaffirm each individual's dependence on God and to seek divine guidance. Freemasonry is open to men of any faith, but religion may not be discussed at Masonic meetings.

The Supreme Being. Masons believe that there is one God and that people employ many different ways to seek, and to express what they know of God. Masonry primarily uses the appellation, "Grand Architect of the Universe," and other non-sectarian titles, to address the Deity. In this way, persons of different faiths may join together in prayer, concentrating on God, rather than differences among themselves. Masonry believes in religious freedom and that the relationship between the individual and God is personal, private, and sacred.

Volume of the Sacred Law. An open volume of the Sacred Law, "the rule and guide of life," is an essential part of every Masonic meeting. The Volume of the Sacred Law in the Judeo/Christian tradition is the Bible; to Freemasons of other faiths, it is the book held holy by them.

The Oath of Freemasonry. The obligations taken by Freemasons are sworn on the Volume of the Sacred Law. They are undertakings to follow the principles of Freemasonry and to keep confidential a Freemason's means of recognition. The much discussed "penalties," judicial remnants from an earlier era, are symbolic, not literal. They refer only to the pain any honest man should feel at the thought of violating his word.

Freemasonry Compared with Religion. Freemasonry lacks the basic elements of religion: (a) It has no dogma or theology, no wish or means to enforce religious orthodoxy. (b) It offers no sacraments. (c) It does not claim to lead to salvation by works, by secret knowledge, or by any other means. The secrets of Freemasonry are concerned with modes of recognition, not with the means of salvation.

Freemasonry Supports Religion. Freemasonry is far from indifferent toward religion. Without interfering in religious practice, it expects each member to follow his own faith and to place his Duty to God above all other duties. Its moral teachings are acceptable to all religions.
